New Playground!

January 26, 2009

PS 62 is thrilled to announce that we will be building a playground in our existing schoolyard! The Trust for Public Land (TPL) is working to transform vacant school lots into vibrant playgrounds and community parks. The effort is in partnership with the City of New York as part of Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC 2030. Visit their website!

The program is focusing on communities that are under served by parks. Our efforts could add trees, gardens, tracks, sports fields, courts, outdoor classrooms, chess and picnic tables, and much more to PS 62’s schoolyard.

BEFORE                                                        AFTER

What would you like to see in the new playground?

What natural spaces would you like to see?  For example: trees, plants, flowers, seating, etc.

What kind of Play/Fitness components would you like to include in our play equipment?

What colors would you like to include?

We are so excited about the new playground! Thank you for putting the blog together Ms. Frizzel!!! Our class is so excited to be involved. We would love to hear from other classes so we can use some of your ideas also!!!!

I would love to see lots of fun activities for the children of our school and community to use. I am thinking some basketball courts or cricket fields… An outdoor classroom would be awesome for classes to use once a week on a schedule (When the weather gets nice). Also, a performance area would be great for Dance Festival!!! A garden area would be great with trees, and grass- what a nice environment for reading!! Hopefully, all colors used will be nice, bright, and welcoming to all..

The play equipment I would like to see are…hmm…I would have to say swings and slides for the kindergartens ,us.and all the bigger grades.I want to have a rock-climbing wall but in order to have that built,we need to recycle.
The colors I would like to see are bright ,not dull.Colors like blue, yellow, hot pink, etc.

I would really like to see an outdoor classroom and trees somewhere in the playground. The architect had a really good point when she stated that trees are always changing….therefore they can be a learning experience throughout the entire year! DESIGN UPDATE
How big do you think our yard is? One mile? One yard? One foot? Well on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, designing classes went outside to the yard. We measured all of the yards with Rolotape. It was a wheel which tracks the amount of feet it travels. All students had a chance to measure the yard. We found the area and perimeter of the yards. All of the yards included the big yard, the yard (at the side of the gym) and the Kindergarten yard. Stay tuned for Class 3-252 to report to you the measurements that we found of how big our school yard really is! Check out our pictures at the blog post above!

I think the idea of a playground is a fantastic one! Children surely enjoy playgrounds and we can also use it as a nature walk for science purposes. This is what I like about P.S. 62, and so does my family, It thinks of the children first.

We can’t have swings because… There will be a long line. You might kick someone in there face. You might fall. You might not get to go on it. You might stand on the it. It isn’t going to have alot of swings. It is going to take up a lot of the space in the playground.

We can’t have sprinklers because … The pipe migt get forzen in the winter and break. You might get durty. You can’t change in school. You can’t play other games. You willbe wet. You will wet your books.

2.Someone may not know how to use the swings.
3.Lots of people may be in line.
    4.Somebody may get hurt.
5.The person who is pushing another person may get hurt.
6.The swings are going to have to take up lots of space.
So do you guys get it?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? BYE, BYE!!!!!!

Thank you for putting this up we are not going to have swigs because there are alot of people about 4 or 5 swings and kids have to wait a long time and when they push there foot up and down it could kick someone in the face and they will get hurt and they will not get to play.We can not get a sprinkler because if we get wet and sit at our desk it will get wet and slides or any thing could get wet and someone can slip fall and they would not get to play that is the stuff I think we can not get.Thank you for the blog agin

I was in my cdlass and we were talking with the playground desiner’s and we were talking about what we should have and what we should not have. The things that we should not have us a swing and a sprinkler. WE can not have that sulf that sulf because if we have a swing some one will maybe fall off and will get hurt, relly hurt. And if we have a sprinkler we will be all wet when we go back to your class and it will mesy everywhere. That is why we can not have those sulf!!!! I disagree with Maria in 3-252. I think we should have a swing and a sprinkler because the designers can design grass so we don’t hurt ourselves. They could also have sprinklers because they could set them off for when the playground is closed and not when people are there.

Hey everbody of P.S 62!!!!! We got back the votes today and the things that you wanted may or may not be there.Hey,look on the bright side:the new playground will be lots of fun. So,as you see,TWO people already told you about the top ten votes.I wont tell you them, though.Today when the playground people came,we got like this small version of the school taken by a sattelite. We had to split up like into three or four groups and place a template where we wanted it to go.Then,we looked at all the other groups, and they were all different. They were different because we all had many different kinds of thinking/versions of how our new playground should look like.Next week.we’ll do the same thing and see how different it looked like last time. So,until then……Bye!!!!!!
